Community Composting for Education and the Environment

West Maui GreenCycle was expanding its established composting operation to increase diversion from the landfill by working with local schools to compost their Source Separated Organics as part of their educational effort. West Maui GreenCycle, although an established facility, was concerned about being a good community neighbor and meeting environmental regulations as they expanded their operation. Selecting a compost system with the best available process control quickly became a very important factor in the expansion.

No. of Heaps: 4 heaps, 3 covers, 25 ft. x 20 ft. x 8 ft. each

Treatment Time: 8 weeks/batch in 3 phases:

Phase 1 (covered): 4 weeks

Phase 2 (covered): 2 weeks

Phase 3 (uncovered): 2 weeks

Aeration: On-Ground Pipe

Control Parameters: Oxygen Control Mode

Input Material: Source Separated Organics, Yard Waste

Equipment: Pre-Treatment (Loader Bucket Mixing) / Skid Steer / Mobile Screen Rental (as needed) / Water Truck

End Product: High-Quality Finished Compost

  2. Meeting vector attraction reduction (VAR) requirements;

  3. Meet time and temperature requirements (PFRP) for pathogen reduction

  5. Clear separation of leachate from stormwater

  8. Lowest total cost of ownership over the life of the facility
